The Apology
When little, I took a McVities biscuit tin to the beach, my Dad under the impression I was collect shells… but I had another plan. My plan was to re-home the magic of live starfish, and gather them I did. I couldn’t say how many, but as many as I could carry. Their orange jellied bodies sparkled against the metal brightness of the fateful tin.
I had knowledge enough to know better, as I filled the tin with life giving sea water, secretly knowing it would fall short of my efforts. Two weeks later the abandoned biscuit tin was discovered in the garden by my unsuspecting dad
“What’s in this tin!?” He shouted
I said nothing…
“Oh my God!!!” He exclaimed
“It stinks!”The stench wafted up to my open bedroom window, the smell of death lingered upon the floral netted curtains.
I felt shame, horror and a lesson was learnt. It’s interesting to see this painting as an apology for something I cannot take back.
Of course this is just my interpretation, you may see something different or relate in some way. I love how painting opens up so many different narratives and becomes a conduit for human connection and the telling of stories; whilst having the ability to capture feelings and the evoke the senses.
